Samsung Extends Smartwatch Software Support to Five Years, Leaving Rivals Behind

Samsung is once again setting the industry standard for software longevity. The tech giant has announced it will provide five years of operating system updates for its latest smartwatch lineup, further widening the gap between itself and its competitors.

According to reports from SamMobile, the newly unveiled Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2 will be guaranteed five major Wear OS upgrades, alongside five years of security patches. This decision significantly extends the usable life of these devices, tackling one of the biggest consumer gripes: wearables becoming obsolete too quickly.

Since the Galaxy Watch 4, Samsung has stuck to a solid four-year update policy. By tacking on an extra year, early adopters firing up their Galaxy Watch 9 or Watch Ultra 2 on One UI 9 Watch (based on Wear OS 7) can expect a steady stream of new features all the way through to Wear OS 12 in 2031. However, this extended support is expected to be exclusive to devices launched this year and beyond.

This move is the final puzzle piece in Samsung’s overarching software ecosystem strategy. The company already offers a whopping seven years of Android updates for its premium smartphones and tablets, while most of its mid-range phones enjoy up to six years of support.

By committing to long-term support across its entire portfolio, Samsung isn't just winning consumer trust at the checkout line—it's positioning Galaxy devices as some of the most reliable and future-proof hardware investments on the market today.
