[Guide] How to Install TWRP Recovery on Samsung Galaxy J5 (2015) LTE (SM-J500F / G / M / NO / Y / j5lte)

  • Device Models:
    • SM-J500F / SM-J500F/DS (India, MEA, Southeast Asia)
    • SM-J500G / SM-J500G/DS (Malaysia, Indonesia)
    • SM-J500M / SM-J500M/DS (Latin America, Brazil)
    • SM-J500NO (South Korea)
    • SM-J500Y (Australia, New Zealand)
    • Unified Device Codename: j5lte
  • Chipset / Platform: Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 (MSM8916 - 64-bit Quad-Core ARM Cortex-A53)
  • Storage Interface: eMMC 4.5
  • Stock OS: Android 5.1.1 Lollipop / Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow (TouchWiz)
  • Target Recovery: TeamWin Recovery Project (TWRP) Custom Recovery
  • Status: 100% Tested & Verified Working

Prerequisites & Critical Warnings

  • Unified Hardware Base: All standard international/regional Snapdragon 410 variants (F, G, M, NO, Y) share identical motherboard and partition architecture under the unified j5lte device tree. The compiled recovery image is cross-compatible across all these variants.
  • Knox Warranty Void: Flashing custom binaries permanently trips the hardware eFuse (0x1), disabling Knox-dependent security features.
  • FRP & OEM Lock: Keep OEM Unlocking toggled ON in Developer Options to prevent Odin failures (SECURE CHECK FAIL: RECOVERY) and avoid getting blocked at boot with Custom Binary Blocked by FRP Lock.
  • Data Backup: Back up important personal files, contacts, and media before flashing.
  • Required Files & Tools:
    • Odin3 (v3.10.7, v3.12.3, or v3.13.1 recommended).
    • Official Samsung Mobile USB Drivers installed on PC.
    • Verified twrp-j5lte-j500.tar file.
    • Reliable Micro-USB data cable connected directly to a rear PC motherboard USB port.
    • Magisk or SuperSU ZIP file to root and prevent the stock Android system from restoring stock recovery on boot.

Step-by-Step Installation Instructions (Nasıl Yüklenir?)

Step 1: Enable Developer Options & OEM Unlock

  1. Go to Settings > About Device > Software Info.
  2. Tap Build Number 7 times continuously until the "Developer mode has been turned on" notification appears.
  3. Return to Settings > Developer Options.
  4. Toggle USB Debugging to ON.
  5. Toggle OEM Unlocking to ON (Crucial: Failure to enable this will trigger Custom Binary Blocked by FRP Lock or write authorization errors in Odin).

Step 2: Boot into Samsung Download Mode

  1. Power off the phone completely.
  2. Press and hold Volume Down + Home + Power buttons simultaneously until the warning screen appears.
  3. Press Volume Up once to confirm and enter Download Mode (Odin Mode).

Step 3: Flash TWRP via Odin

  1. Launch Odin3 as Administrator on your PC.
  2. Connect your phone to the PC using the Micro-USB cable. The ID:COM box will light up in light blue or yellow.
  3. Click the AP (or PDA) button and select your twrp-j5lte-j500.tar file.
  4. Go to the Options tab in Odin:
    • Keep F. Reset Time checked.
    • Uncheck Auto Reboot (Crucial: Prevents stock Android from rebooting automatically and replacing TWRP with the stock 3e recovery).
  5. Click Start and wait for Odin to display the green PASS! status.

Step 4: First Boot into TWRP Recovery & Root

  1. Disconnect the Micro-USB cable.
  2. Force power off the phone by removing the removable battery for 3–5 seconds, then reinsert it (or press and hold Volume Down + Power for 7 seconds until the display shuts off completely).
  3. Immediately press and hold Volume Up + Home + Power simultaneously.
  4. Release all buttons the exact moment the Samsung boot logo appears with small recovery text at the top left corner.
  5. The device will boot straight into the TWRP interface.
  6. Inside TWRP:
    • Swipe to allow system modifications.
    • If running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with forced encryption enabled, navigate to Wipe > Format Data, type yes, and confirm.
    • Go to Install and flash Magisk.zip or SuperSU.zip to permanently disable stock recovery auto-restoration and gain root access.
  7. Select Reboot > System.
